The 2009 SEVAs at the Crest
The 2009 SEVAs — or Student Educational Video Awards — were announced May 7 at the Crest Theater for SECC's 20th annual Award Night event. Sponsored by Comcast, nearly 1000 students, teachers and family members arrived to greet the "paparazzi" and watch the show.
There were 16 SEVAs and 15 honorable mentions announced and students also saw runner-up clips, student producer interviews, teacher recognition and an abundance of school spirit and camaraderie. There were 68 schools and 1600 students represented in this year’s record-breaking level of participation, and judges watched 370 entries to determine who received the awards.

The 2009 Allan Hinderstein Award

Media teacher Brian Weitzel and his students after Award Night
The Allan Hinderstein Award
Andrew Carnegie Middle School media teacher
Brian Weitzel is the 2009 award recipient
SECC was fortunate to have a unique CSUS professor become involved with K-12 teachers. Allan Hinderstein had a remarkable vision that recognized the importance and value of media production for teachers to enhance the learning experience of classroom students. Allan spent much of his time working with teachers, encouraging them to use media and video production in their teaching. We lost Allan to cancer last year and, every year in Allan’s honor, we now recognize a teacher who embodies his philosophy.
Brian Weitzel is the media teacher at Andrew Carnegie Middle School where they produce a daily campus news program, Carnegie Connection. In addition to their daily newscast, students create commercials to highlight interesting topics for Carnegie students and the general community. As a long time supporter of the SEVAs, Brian and his students have created more than 150 SEVA entries during the past five years. Brian’s dedication and expertise in video production has allowed his students a real-world, hands-on video production education. Brian has also helped SECC with SEVA trainings and promotions for the past two years.
Carnegie was recently featured on KVIE’s Arts Alive program, where Brian said the following; “I have the best job in the world. I get to kind of wind up the kids and turn them loose and just watch the creativity flow.” It’s this attitude that makes Brian the recipient of the 2009 Allan Hinderstein Award.
