Professional Development

In cooperation with member schools districts, SECC produces professional development programs and offers them for teachers to view online and on cable. The SEVA Training Series in the next section is sponsored by SECC for teacher development and student learning.

Elk Grove Unified School District: Teach 21

The projects showcased in Elk Grove Unified School District Advancing Technology Grant (ANU) Teach 21 collection stem from the dynamic teaching methods of the Teach 21 Cohort and reflect the district’s commitment to make visible what teaching and learning in the 21 century looks like in elementary, middle and high school classrooms. By including classroom video clips with each lesson, the videos provide educators with a window into what the Partnership for 21st Century Skills refers to as the 4C's: critical thinking, communication, creativity and collaboration. It is important that educators can see model lessons as they are being taught — with real teachers and real students.

Twin Rivers Unified School District: 21st century skills

This series of videos serves to begin the ongoing process of preparing students for the future — a future where skills are not the same as they have been in the past. The district videos provide opportunities for teachers to practice 21st century skills and “to understand those skills and see the relationship to the world outside,” says Steve Scott, Twin Rivers USD Instructional Technology Director. “So this transition to the outside world becomes much more seamless… Ideally, it’s an ongoing continuum of development.”

Immersion Learning™

In 2002, Dr. Robert Ballard and Dr. Stephen Coan founded Immersion Learning™ — a nonprofit science education organization that brings ocean adventures and discoveries from Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration, the University of Rhode Island and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration to kids in classrooms, after-school settings and informal learning arenas. Immersion’s scientific expeditions include Black Sea, Titanic Live, Ancient Eruptions, Secrets of the Gulf, Dolphins, Monterey Bay, Life at the Extremes and Project Sea camel. Immersion works with a select group of partner sites that share a common purpose of inspiring young people in the areas of science, exploration and conservation.

In our constantly changing world, Immersion helps students understand the positive roles that science and technology play in their everyday lives and exposes them to ongoing scientific expeditions to ignite their interest in real discovery and learning.

Digital Journalist Program

Digital JournalistsDigital Journalist Program

The Digital Journalist Program helps increase student media production, teaches the techniques of broadcast journalism, provides technical support for teachers and students, facilitates a larger outlet for student videos and increases participation in the Student Educational Video Awards (SEVA). The program is made possible through the combined efforts of the Gannett Foundation, News10 and SECC.

News10 and SECC production staff provide training for students and teachers at each site, and students have an opportunity to use video to share their visions and stories with the entire community — on News10, SECC’s cable channels and online.

One grant requirement is that the school submits at least two videos to SECC’s annual SEVA contest. Open to all Sacramento county students (K-20), the contest celebrates the talents and visions of student video producers and their work in the areas of documentary, school news/events, PSA and instructional.

For many years, SECC has instructed students about the value of video production. Special funding in 2002 from the Sacramento Metropolitan Cable Commission allowed SECC to launch the starter kit program and create three video kits loaned to interested schools. SECC provides quality educational resources to learners of all ages in the Sacramento community through video and other communication technologies via cable systems and networks and is a collaborative effort of the K-20 education community.

The Gannett Foundation grants enabled Sacramento’s News10 to join the program and teach students the tenets and values of journalism they practice daily.
