American River College is lucky to boast a large number of support services for students. Two long-running programs with proven success rates are Reading Across the Disciplines (RAD) and Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC).
Both programs are part of the English Department and are designed to help students succeed in their college-level courses and programs. Students who take RAD or WAC pass their classes 89% of the time whereas students who do not take advantage of these programs pass only 63% of the time. Additionally, students who take RAD or WAC have an 80% success rate in all their classes.
RAD is a nine week, ½ unit transferable course that helps students from any academic or vocational discipline improve their classroom performance.
RAD can help students improve their:
- Studying and test performance.
- Reading speed and comprehension.
- Class and book note taking.
- Vocabulary.
RAD is an individualized experience. You can discover the best study methods for you using the texts and materials from the class you want help with. During your time in RAD, you will learn what you need be successful and efficient in your classes.
WAC helps students from all academic disciplines with any academic writing task. Students enroll in ½ unit of one of our WAC courses to improve their writing skills.
After a required orientation, WAC students will be able to access:
- Individual writing conferences.
- Workshops on a variety of grammar and composition topics.
- A drop-in writing center.
WAC serves all students, including those who have little or no experience with college writing, as well as students who are already skilled writers.
Both the RAD and WAC programs are located on the main campus in the Learning Resource Center and are also both available to students at the Natomas Center.
Students can join RAD and WAC by coming into the LRC on the campus they prefer to attend and talking to a RAD or WAC staff member. We are always happy to help students get started in our programs.
